The technology trap

It struck me last week that I haven’t seen my daughters without some kind of  mobile device close at hand for ages. One walks around the house with her laptop, the other sleeps with her cell and when required to turn off all screens,  my youngest couldn’t think of anything to do.

My daughters are technologically connected – constantly.

This texting busy-ness means they rarely have the time to talk –  to me or each other.

Technology is taking over my family.  I try to engage real human conversation with my adolescents – using chocolate bribes – but those chats last as long as the chocolate.  There’s a ban on cellphones at the dinner table, but as the only adult at the table,  I seem to be the only one who upholds it.

Those texts still fly, until I launch the evil eye.

I just saw Sherry Turkle on TED this am:  Sherry Turkle – Connected, but alone?

Her talk made me think more about the ramifications of all this hiding behind technology we seem to be doing in my own family. I can get eye contact when I wear something offensive to teenaged sensibilities, but our conversations still tend to be one-sided.

I’m tired of having monologues without a captive audience. I’m craving two way conversations.

Maybe it’s time to get some one on one with each of the girls  - phones off, I bring the chocolate.

Hey – can I push the dream even further….  maybe they’ll consider falling off the grid completely with me for a little while….to a little place like this.

Some techno-free dreaming from my new favorite website.

Text free, choco filled brekkie anyone?

Happy Blue Monday!

January 16th, 2012 by susan

It might be Blue Monday – but I’m dragging out my inner Scarlett O’Hara and simply refusing to let today or any other winter day get to me.

A walk, a disciplined schedule,( that’s tough for a diehard procrastinator), some hot chocolate and chats with friends.

If I can keep this up, I can get through to March….. frozen fingers crossed.

What do you do to keep the winter blues at bay?

Happy Blue Monday!

Girl Power!

December 19th, 2011 by susan

It only takes a Girl…

I’m so lucky to have grown up in a society where women are considered equals.  Our mothers and grandmothers and great grandmothers fought hard to have equal rights here in the Western world.

There may be work to done on the gender equality front as far as attitudes are concerned; we’re still mostly dominated by male governance, but at least women’s rights here are protected by the law. Unfortunately, that’s not the case in most developing nations.  Abuse, neglect, genital mutilation, honor killings, HIV/AIDS, systematic rapes, child brides, no access to education for women…. the list of ways women are put down goes on and on.

Gender inequality is huge problem around the globe, and we women here can’t sit back and let it continue.

For the sake of our daughters, and grand daughters and great grand daughters… please help and support the education of women and girls around the globe. It’s one way to give these women a voice, and shine a light in their darkness.

We can all work towards  a better world – and it only takes a girl.

Make it a really good day

November 25th, 2011 by susan

Photo - Louie Schwartzberg

The TED lecture series always surprises and delights me with information about almost everything that goes on in the world.

Talks by activists, scientists, poets, doctors, photographers, environmentalists,  to name just a few.   Men and women who are committed and passionate and inspiring. They are always fascinating, and I learn so much from them.

I love to share what I see on TED, and this incredible talk by  director/photographer/filmmaker Louie Schwartzberg, entitled Nature.Beauty.Gratitude. is something I saw today which made me think, and opened my heart.

Schwartzberg’s images are combined with the thoughtful, deep words of Benedictine monk David Steindl-Rast, together they are simply beautiful.

Click on this link to see the video:   Louie Schwartzberg – TED

Look, listen, open your heart and make it a really good day.

Today is not just another day, it’s a gift to you and to me.

Enjoy.

Awaken

November 24th, 2011 by susan
If you want to awaken all of humanity, then awaken all of yourself.
If you want to eliminate suffering in the world,
then eliminate all that is dark and negative in yourself.
Truly, the greatest gift you have to give
is that of your own self-transformation…

Saw this on Facebook the other day and just had to share! SK

Fundamentals of being human?

October 18th, 2011 by susan

I’m generally an optimistic person.  I wanted this post to be something uplifting, especially considering the long hiatus.

But I saw something today that has shaken me to the core.

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/asia/china/8833993/Chinese-toddler-run-over-and-ignored-to-remain-in-vegetative-state.html

I saw something truly horrific today.

Posted on Facebook .   But it’s all over the internet.

A video from a closed circuit camera in Chinese street.

A toddler being run over by a truck – not once, but twice.

Not one truck but two.

As she lay there, broken and injured, people looked at her and passed her by.

According to the news report 18 people passed her by before a woman finally picked her up.

The child is in a vegetative state – or dead – depending on the report.

I’m still in shock.

I can’t get any work done.

All I see is that small child lying in the road.

Broken and in pain.

It’s shameful.

What kind of person would leave a child to die like that.

What has happened to us as humans?

That we could walk past such pain without a second glance.

What causes such callousness, such neglect, such indifference?

Such evil.

The horror of indifference.

The evil of neglect and callousness and indifference is all around us, it happens everyday.

It happens when we get too busy, too selfish, too self-absorbed, too greedy to take action, no matter how small to stop this evil.

This is one child whose life has been snuffed out by callousness and indifference.

There are children around the world who live and die in pain and suffering.

Is this a vision of the future of humanity?

God forbid.

We are women, we are fundamentally human.  We make a difference.

Open your eyes to suffering. Stand up against callousness. Speak out against neglect, indifference and abuse.

Don’t let this happen again.

I pray,  I hope, and have to believe that we will all come together as humans and decry the evil that caused such shameful callousness.

Most of all, I pray for that little girl. Her name is YueYue.

Anything is always possible…and other predictions!

May 31st, 2011 by susan

About Saturday’s end of the world and prophecies in general… by Nicky Mikula

According to Harold Camping; 89 year old preacher from Oakland, California, the end of the world was supposed to have taken place last weekend, on Saturday May 21. He spent over $100 million on media promotion. Many even quit their jobs or spent their life savings preparing for the forecasted event.

What was your reaction to Mr. Camping’s prophecy?

Are you influenced by any predictions in your life? Are you preparing to enjoy the forecasted warm and beautiful summer, the announced prosperous economic times ahead or even the 2012 change predicted by the Mayan calendar? It’s easy to laugh at Harold Camping or others like him. However, chances are, you are being influenced on some level by some form of prediction.

We love predictions

We like to prognosticate. In fact, we all use the skills at our disposal to track along possible destiny lines for ourselves, our loved ones and our community. It’s what we humans like to do.

It is called by many names: predicting trends, following cycles, forecasting, guessing, divining, channeling, tapping into intuition, drawing conclusions, making prophecies…It is done in most areas of human endeavor: economics, politics, meteorology, astrology, philanthropy, religion and spirituality, metaphysics, psychology, science…

In fact, the only area I can think of where we don’t make predictions is when we are at one with our creativity. When we do this we are living in the moment and are not thinking about the past and worrying over the future.

Listen to the evening news and you will notice how freely we make predictions and how easily we take them onboard. This is one reason I rarely watch the news and am careful about what I read.

How predictions work

First of all, let me be clear here that, according to my world view and my understanding of how the Universe works, no one can predict a future event with a 100% degree of certainty. However, it is possible to predict the likelihood of an event happening sometime in the future.

In the old days when life was much slower and simpler, it was much easier to make predictions. However, because our world is now very fast and complex, our future is becoming increasingly unpredictable.

The Universe is infinite, unbounded and is always creating and expanding. Anything is always possible.

Our State of  Consciousness

One of the most important variables influencing our existence today, along with the planetary movements and weather patterns, is our state of consciousness. Our level of human consciousness is evolving very quickly. This is happening as more people take responsibility for their lives, heal what needs to be healed, become more loving, honor their connection to the land and start to understand how the Universe works.

When we make a prediction, we send energy into creating what we are predicting. The more people lend energy to creating an event the more that event will be anchored into reality.

The more people listen to the news and freak out about what is being said, gossip behind people’s back, belittle what they don’t understand, label a child as being handicapped, the more that outcome will be created and reinforced.

When predictions are helpful

Predictions can at times be helpful,  especially when they promote health, happiness and optimism. Even when predictions are based in fear and stress, they can be turned into opportunities for growth and learning.

They can help us make sense of the world. I usually find that there is a kernel of truth in most everything I hear.  Then I like to find a way for it to make sense to me. When I listen with an open heart, turn down the volume of my filters, I always find something that will enlighten my thoughts and my life on some level.

About “End of the World” predictions

When we read about Harold Camping’s biblical “Judgment day “prediction, we can look at it another way. Rather than interpret it as the day the world ends and everyone gets raptured up to heaven, we can see it as a day we decide to start to live in our own “heaven on earth“. For instance, the day we let go of pain and suffering could be the day of our proverbial rise up to heaven.

Here’s what I predict

I predict that we will continue going through huge changes in consciousness. I predict we will treat each other very differently in 20 years than we do today. I predict we are becoming more loving, we are learning to focus on our similarities rather than our differences and we are learning to accept ourselves and each other for who we truly are.

Regardless of any forecast made,  it is important to stay in our heart and continue doing what we love.

Anybody peddling fear is not living in their heart.

Yoga and meditation are great ways to help us prepare for these light-filled days and I predict that the light is already here for those who are open to see it.

Namaste,

Nicky

Have more fun!

May 20th, 2011 by susan

Having fun and staying on purpose by Nicole Mikula: Yoga and meditation teacher

Most people agree that having fun is a good thing. Some believe that having fun helps us tap into what the yogis call our Dharma,  and stay on purpose while others believe that life is just a random game of chance.

Live life to the fullest

It really doesn’t matter what life view we hold.

What matters is that we each live life to the fullest. As we do this we feel happy and productive and everyone benefits by our inspiration.

Having fun, for me, is like a barometer that reminds me I am connected to my heart center and am following my Dharma. When I feel stressed and uncomfortable I know I am feeling fear on some level and am not in my heart.

How can we bring more fun into our lives?

1.  Get curious

When Helen Keller was asked what could be worse than being blind she replied: “having sight, but no vision”

As we get more curious, our mind opens up and we start to see the full potentiality of the Universe. We can do this by being more mindful and paying attention. This activates our frontal lobes which help us see the many possibilities that lead to expansion rather than the probabilities that lead to contraction. The more we become visionaries the more fun we will have.   Meditation and yoga are great tools to help us become more curious. This helps us tap into our creative potential which is our true nature.

2.  Overcome fear of failure

We are often afraid to follow our dream for fear we will fail somehow. We worry we are not good enough. Of course, we only reach a level of proficiency in any given area with practice. Many of us feel that we need to be given permission somehow to move our life in a new direction. That to me is an excuse to stay stuck in a narrow, limiting way of viewing the world and feeling secure. The more we overcome our fear of failure, the more fun we will have.

To get over the fear of failure, I like to view failures and successes as equal opportunities to grow and evolve. This allows us to turn disappointments into sources of power and strength. When we do this we gain mastery over our fears and can start to see the world through the prism of unity rather than separation.

3. Co-create with the Universe

Just like the Universe that is infinite and unbounded so are we. We are meant to expand and get over our belief that we live in a limited Universe where resources are scarce. We expand when we allow ourselves to create what we want. There is plenty for everyone and the more we tap into this abundance and create what we love, the more fun we will have.  One way to create is to co-create with other energies who are on the same wave length as us. This has to do with the speed at which we vibrate as energy.

Just close your eyes, breathe and think of how you can bring more fun into your life!

Namaste,

Nicky

Wisdom and other truths

May 5th, 2011 by susan

A post about looking inward for your own truth, by  Nicky Mikula

Connecting to wisdom and finding truth

Last weekend I went to the Burlington Yoga Conference.

I attended a fascinating lecture on the Baghvad Gita given by Devarshi Stephen Hartman; the Dean of the Kripalu School of Yoga. With insight and humor, Devarshi made a two thousand year old story relevant to everyone in the room. He weaved his insights and queries about life through the tale. He shared how the dialogue between Krishna and Arjun helped him shape his beliefs.

In so doing, Devarshi made the Gita his. He blended the wisdom of the Gita with his wisdom and became one with the wisdom. Any veil between his wisdom and that of the Gita simply disappeared. When we do this, we become powerful co-creators with the Universe. We can each do this too by understanding what wisdom is, connecting to wisdom and finding our truth.

What is wisdom?

For me, wisdom comes from the heart and transcends time and place. Knowledge by contrast originates in the brain. Knowledge often turns into wisdom but wisdom does not necessarily come from knowledge. Wisdom is created in, what I refer to as, the Loving Oneness Mind (LOM) and knowledge in the Fear Ego Mind (FEM). Both play important roles for our experience here on earth.

Looking out

The wisdom of others is useful when it helps us shape our beliefs, find our voice, live our authenticity and make sense of what we don’t understand. Wisdom can easily become a platitude when it becomes a crutch rather than a gateway. As a crutch, it prevents us from finding our own truth. As a gateway, it allows for growth, exploration and ultimately authenticity.

There is so much to learn from the great teachers that surround us; the Eckhart Tolles, the Wayne Dyers, the sacred texts, books, friends, our children… Often people that inspire us are found in the most unlikely places. However, we can lose ourselves behind this outside council. When we rely on others as being wiser, more intelligent, more worthy than we are we lose inner power. Whenever we lose power we are not standing in our truth. When we are not standing in our truth we are not able to fully understand the subtlety of all truths as wondrous expressions of the one great Truth.

Looking within

Everyone has the ability to tap into the wisdom that is within each and every one of us. I believe it is our birth right to do so. We tap into our inner wisdom when we open ourselves up to receive. Meditation is a terrific tool to help still the mind, connect to who we are so we gain the confidence to truly listen and to truly believe. We so often get bogged down in fear and worry over being wrong or embarrassed. What does it mean to be wrong? It is all about perspective and consciousness anyway. When we are in our truth we let go of any attachments to outcomes.

Connecting to our wisdom helps us find our truth so we live a life of meaning and purpose.

Here are some steps to help you get started:

  • Find your passion
  • Get curious
  • Learn, discuss and share
  • Listen

And yoga and meditation are the perfect tools to help you do just that!

Namaste,

Nicky
